Story #16: A patriot's daughter

Born to a anti-British family that lived under the constantly swinging sword of fluctuating income, Surabhi was everyone's darling. Despite the patriotic nerve that throbbed so strongly in each family member's body, Surabhi - being the only child born after the freedom of independant India from the British - never really understood the bubbling energy that would emerge from her father's revered adherence to his motherland. She knew it was the right thing - but without the experience of having lived in an era clouded with the thwacks and smacks of the British on hindustanis, Surabhi had no clear understanding of what it really meant to be a patriot. Of what it meant, to do something great for the motherland. Of what it meant, to save the life of a fellow countryman.

After her father's demise Surabhi was married off to a pro-Congress civil engineer - Giridhar Shastry. A hot headed red blooded Congress wallah who supported the then Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi's move in everything. With things simmering at this pace - Indira is shot dead by one of her security gaurds. An event that brings a surprising new episode into Surabhi's unprepared vase of patriotism one dark night.
